Solo developer Ryan Laley has finally launched Mimic into early access. Mixing co-op and PvP systems, this online survival horror game is a brand-new twist on the asymmetrical multiplayer classics.

“Together with your crew, you must escape the claustrophobic, crumbling corridors of the Icarus spacecraft while rooting out who amongst you is secretly a mimic — a malicious alien creature that can disguise itself as a fellow human survivor. Solve various objectives to create your escape route and survive against not one but two sinister threats pursuing you. As the terrifying titular mimic, hunt from the shadows and beneath the flesh of a friend. As the agent, ensure that the mimic survives for further study. Direct the android to those who you suspect are not who they seem.”

Horror fanatics are familiar with similar pitches, both old and new, but it’s Mimic’s bet on two markedly different hostile entities that could set it apart from the competition. Those eager to play will probably need to convince a group of friends, though, since we know it might be difficult to reliably find public games at this stage.

Laley is promising substantial additions with the first tentative roadmap, and solo horror fans might be happy to read a single-player mode is planned alongside achievements, among other things:

Available on Steam and the Epic Games Store, Mimic expects to spend at least 12 months in early access. Its evolution depends on player feedback, but some plans are already locked, with a focus on more content and community-centric features like Twitch integration. As it stands, Mimic is selling for $6.59 / £5.93 / €6,75 (-40% launch discount until Nov. 10).

For now, horror diehards on consoles will have to wait, but the developer has promised PS5 and Xbox Series X/S ports in 2027, when Mimic will potentially exit early access.
