A mod that would have attempted to bring multiplayer to The Last of Us Part 2 is canceling its release after the developer claimed to have been sent a letter by developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting an end to the project.

Mod developer Speclizer shared word of their The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod and its shelving on their social media, where they explained a bit about what Sony had asked of them:

Hey everyone, as you all know, the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod that has been in development since January was supposed to release this month. Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released. Extremely sad…

— Speclizer (@Speclizer_) September 13, 2026

Speclizer’s mod aimed to deliver on a feature that Naughty promised, but ultimately failed to do itself, namely bringing The Last of Us multiplayer back for Part 2, which was ultimately delayed and spun off into its own project, and then canceled. As it goes now, Sony and Naughty Dog seemingly have no plans to return to The Last of Us multiplayer as the latter is currently working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

With Speclizer teasing that the next thing they do will be a personal project, stay tuned to the mods topic as we watch for updates.
