Embark Studios says THE FINALS will begin a new chapter on October 20, evolving the game show as the multiplayer shooter nears its third anniversary.

The game’s website provided the update details. In a blog post written by Christian Aarsrud, the game’s executive producer, it was noted that they usually provide updates on a seasonal basis, but this time around, they said they had one big goal for the entire year and focused on improving the game they already had.

That longer runway allowed us to take on work that doesn’t fit inside a three-month cycle. With it we have been able to go deeper on existing parts of the game while also investing in larger, more complex systems that need more time to get right.

And while every season brings new content, the bulk of our energy went into deepening the experience as a whole. As we approach October, now is the time when much of that work comes together.

THE FINALS Prepares for a New Era on October 20

The blog post also promises updates to arenas, sponsors, and destructions. On the latter, Embark promises more nuance in destruction. In the update, parts of the environment will degrade slowly. This means that floors will sag, walls will lean, and buildings will collapse in more varied ways.

Updates are being made to arena lighting and materials to improve visual quality. They are also making broader design changes to improve how every arena plays.

As for sponsor updates, Embark wants to strengthen the relationship players have with the sponsors they select at the start of each season, and they say they are improving the presentation of the game-show aspects of THE FINALS.

Sponsors are central to it. They’ve grown in importance season after season, and now we want them to be a core part of your experience as a Contestant. You’re competing for someone, and we want that relationship to carry identity, personality and purpose, rather than being a passive progression system.

We’re also strengthening the presentation of the game show itself. We’re reworking how Contestants, teams and Arenas are introduced, as well as how the show looks, feels and unfolds while you’re playing.

How do you feel about the updates coming to THE FINALS? Sound off about this story and all others in our official Discord server.
